Hey,Hey, Let’s Enjoy May!

I recently came across an old daily planner from 2003.  Curious to see how I was spending my time way back then, I looked at the page for the month of May.  I was surprised to see that at the top of the page I had written:  “Nothing Extra”!! I suspect that was because the previous May had been very busy. At that point in time I was just learning the little secret about the Month of May.  It is a crazy busy (but wonderful) month!

In December, which we know gets hectic with holiday tasks and celebrations, we all expect and plan to be really busy, but May? Seems like it should be a more relaxing month as we enjoy the arrival of spring. We are often blindsided by the flurry of activity in May.  If we are not prepared, the events of May can add more stress to our already stressful everyday lives.

But do not fear!  We’ve created a list of 7 Tips to Help You Enjoy May.  With a little planning, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the celebrations and events that happen in the busy, wonderful month of May.

7 Tips to Help You Enjoy May:

  1. Create a calendar with all events for May and post it on a bulletin board or on-line so that everyone in your family is aware of the happenings for the month. Plan for sporting events, banquets, concerts, end of year picnics, fund raisers, etc. Do not forget to schedule baby sitters, if needed.
  2. Make a list of the events you are participating in and those people to whom you are giving gifts or greeting cards this month.  Keep in mind: Mother’s Day (May 13th),Birthdays, Graduations, Religious celebrations, Weddings, Anniversaries, Retirements, Baby showers, teachers, coaches…
  3. Order online or visit retail shops for:  gifts, books, jewelry, flowers, gift cards. If you give cash gifts, stop by the bank to get the cash long before the event.
  4. If you haven’t already ordered personalized gifts order them now.
  5. If you are hosting an event, make your plan as soon as possible. Mail invitations, plan menu, make grocery list, etc.  If you are bringing a dish (e.g. dessert or appetizer, etc.) to an event, determine what you will need (number of servings, ingredients) and order or prepare the dish ahead, if possible.
  6. Make sure all family members have nice spring outfits that fit properly.
  7. Make sure cameras and video cameras are “event ready” – change/charge batteries and make sure memory cards have adequate space.

Oh, by the way, my May 2012 calendar looks very much like that busy daily planner of May, 2003.  The difference now is that I’m older, wiser, and I realize that special days and events go by way too quickly.  It’s best to plan ahead so you and your family can relax and enjoy all the wonderful activities and celebrations that take place in the month of May.

Mother’s Day 2012

Whether you are celebrating your own mom, your mother-in-law, or even that honorary mom you have always counted on, plan to take some time to connect on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13th. It’s a perfect day to say “thanks” and to let the women in your life know how you feel.

Many of us like to find the a great gift for mom, but it seems what’s appreciated most by mom is a simple connection, whether in person, on the phone, via email, or Skype,  Mother’s Day is the day to make sure you reach out.

Many moms (like me) are happy enjoying a simple meal with family & friends. The meal that works best with our schedules this Mother’s Day is brunch (make reservations as soon as you can).  My favorite “gift”?  Handmade Mother’s Day cards from my teens (a tradition which started a dozen or so years ago).  Brunch and cards are a simple celebration, but the day is always simply wonderful!

As I no longer have a mom to celebrate I also use time Mother’s Day weekend to reach out to my friends and family who are great moms. Moms I talk with often who help me to be the best mom I can be.  I connect with friends who have lost their moms and friends who aren’t moms but have played a significant role in the lives of my children.

There’s no better time than Mother’s Day weekend to connect with the moms in your life.  No grand gifts expected or required…just a little time and a kind connection.  Plan to reach out and enjoy celebrating those special people in your life on Mother’s Day, you’ll be glad you did!
